The PVC line deserves the emphasis. PVC reads as the obvious cheap build – it is light, it cuts with a hand saw, and the fittings are self-explanatory. What is not obvious is that PVC embrittles in cold and that a target stand takes a small shock on every single arrow. Those two facts combine into a frame that is fine all summer and snaps at the fittings in February. It is not that PVC cannot work; it is that a $45 PVC build is a seasonal consumable, and EMT conduit costs about the same and is not.

A-Frame vs H-Frame

A-frame – two legs splayed front to back, target leaned or hung on the front face. The broad base makes this the most stable option and the easiest to make self-supporting. It is what most commercial folding stands are.

H-frame – two uprights with a crossbar, giving a wide flat surface to support the target. Better for large or floppy targets that need backing across their width, including big bag targets that sag when hung from a single point. Needs either a wide foot or staking to match A-frame stability.

If you shoot on soft ground, either design benefits from ground stakes or adjustable feet – uneven terrain is the other thing that makes a stand walk, and it is easy to miss because it happens over weeks rather than in one session.

Matching the Stand to the Target

Different targets load a stand differently, which is worth thinking about before you build one frame for everything.

A foam cube is compact and heavy for its size – it wants a stand that supports it from underneath rather than one it hangs from. A bag target is heavier and flexible, so it needs width and a hanging point or a full-width shelf, and a wet bag target is heavier still. A 3D animal is awkward rather than heavy and usually stands on its own feet or a low platform. And a large or XL target can easily out-mass a light frame, which is where wheels earn their money.

One more thing that saves arrows: whatever the stand is made of, keep the frame members out of the shooting area behind the target face. If your uprights run up either side of a foam cube, a bad shot hits steel. Set them wide, or set them behind the target rather than beside it. Portable Stand or a Permanent Post?

Everything above assumes a stand you fold up and move – the right approach if your shooting spot might change. If you have shot from the exact same backyard location for years, a permanent mount is simpler and sturdier: drive a steel T-post (the same kind used for fencing) and fit an inexpensive T-post target hanger kit, or set a 4×4 or 6×6 post roughly two feet deep – concrete-anchored for a range that sees serious use. A permanent post skips the spread-limiter problem entirely, since there is no frame left to splay, but it only pays off if you are certain the spot will not move.

Wind Tips a Stand Before You Ever Shoot It

The spread limiter above solves impact-driven failure – legs splaying open from the shock of an arrow strike. Wind is a different failure mode entirely, and it acts on the stand before you nock an arrow: a large flat target face catches wind like a sail, and a raised, lightweight stand can walk or tip over in a gust with nobody near it. That is why many commercial stands drill straight through each foot for ground nails or stakes – a separate anchor point from the spread limiter, aimed at wind and uneven ground rather than shot impact. If you are building your own and skip this, at least weight the base with something you already own, and do not assume a stand that passed the “hit it hard” test is also stable sitting empty in an open yard.

Know what is behind it

A stand does not stop arrows and a worn target may not either. Arrows pass through foam more often than people expect, especially at short range with a heavy bow. Set your range up so the backstop behind the target – a berm, a hanging mat, a solid fence – is what actually catches a pass-through, not a neighbour’s property.
