Sharpen or Replace?
It depends on the head. Fixed-blade broadheads with solid (non-replaceable) blades are meant to be sharpened and re-sharpened. Replaceable-blade fixed heads and mechanical heads use thin, factory-sharp blades you simply swap out when dull or damaged – sharpening them is usually not worth it. Know which type you have before you start.
How to Sharpen a Fixed-Blade Head
- Clean the head and secure it (a broadhead wrench or holder helps).
- Pick your tool – a flat sharpening stone, a dedicated broadhead sharpener with preset angles, or a guided system. Preset-angle tools are easiest for consistency.
- Set a consistent angle and draw each blade edge across the stone, the same number of strokes per side.
- Work coarse to fine – start on a coarser grit to set the edge, finish on fine to refine it.
- Strop on leather or a strop to remove the burr and bring it to shaving-sharp.
- Test – it should shave hair off your arm or cleanly cut a stretched rubber band with no snag.
The Angle Nobody Puts a Number On
“Set a consistent angle” is right but incomplete without a number to aim for. Broadhead cutting edges are typically ground close to 18-25 degrees per side, with roughly 19 degrees a common factory target – noticeably more acute than a general-purpose knife, which more often runs 20-25 degrees per side for durability. That acute angle is what lets a broadhead slice cleanly with the leading edge rather than parting tissue by force, but it also means the edge is thinner and more fragile than a hunting knife’s – which is exactly why a broadhead nicks and needs a touch-up faster than the knife in your other pocket. Match your sharpening tool’s angle guide to something in that 18-22 degree range per side rather than guessing, and treat “as acute as my knife” as too obtuse for a broadhead.
Do Not Chase a Mirror Finish: A Little Tooth Cuts Better on Hide
The instinct once an edge shaves hair is to keep going for a mirror polish, and for a broadhead that instinct works against you. A heavily polished edge is excellent at push-cutting – laying open soft, resistance-free material almost without friction – but it can skate across tougher fibrous material like hide and connective tissue instead of biting in, because there is nothing left on the edge to grab. A slightly toothy edge, left just shy of a full mirror polish, keeps microscopic serrations that catch and saw through hide the way a polished edge cannot. That toothiness is exactly what you want on the material a broadhead actually meets, and it is one reason experienced sharpeners deliberately stop at a mid-fine stone rather than stropping every last scratch out – the shave-hair and rubber-band tests below still pass with that finish, so you are not giving up sharpness to get it.
The Sharpness Test
“Hunting sharp” means it slices, not scrapes. Two quick tests: it should shave a patch of arm hair effortlessly, or cleanly sever a stretched rubber band with light pressure. If it drags or scrapes, keep refining and stropping.
Keep Them Sharp
Sharpen right before the season and touch up after any contact with a target or the ground. Keep heads covered in a quiver hood, dry them to prevent rust, and inspect edges before every hunt.
If you shoot replaceable-blade or mechanical heads, skip sharpening – carry spare blades and swap them. Save your sharpening effort for solid fixed-blade heads.
